Spring is coming!
I already have visions of warm weather, long walks in the Washington woods, and… spring cleaning. I love cleaning as much as anyone, but with a baby on me constantly it’s hard to get even the smallest of chores done.
Given that we just moved into our new home, my mission this Spring is to get the house clean and start some projects to renew the home and make it ours. Here’s how to refresh your home this Spring, too.

Declutter as much as you can.
If your family is like mine, you accumulate way too much stuff without realizing. I learned this the hard way when we were packing and stuff just kept coming out of the woodworks no matter how many boxes we packed.
Now I’m making much more of an effort to get rid of anything I don’t use – from the “why do we have this”es to the “keep it just in case”s. For someone who is sentimental and doesn’t like to waste anything, this is a major challenge. But you’ll be amazed by how different a room looks after you fill up a donation bag!
I have a whole post on decluttering made easy, complete with free printables!
Look online for inspiration.
I don’t know how I lived before Pinterest. It’s my go-to for finding home decor trends, creative DIY’s, creative organization methods, and products that fit my style. As we plan our home renovations, I’m on Pinterest almost daily saving ideas. Want to be pinning buddies? You can check out what I’m pinning by visiting my Pinterest profile.
Outside of Pinterest, I also like HGTV’s website and Houzz for more decor inspiration.
Consider your budget.
Home improvements can get expensive, quick. We’re finding this out the hard way as we look over the estimates for all the work we want to get done. It’s important to know how much money you’re working with from the beginning so that you can set reasonable limits and avoid the trap of “let’s just add on this one little thing.” When you get estimates from contractors, make sure you ask whether there are any additional fees that might be added to the total.
Choose a project (or several).
As you go through your inspiration pictures, pick one project (or more, if time and budget allow) that really speaks to you. They can be large or small scale. Our first “big” renovation that we are planning for is redoing our floors. While I wait to get that project started, I’ve also been doing smaller improvements, such as using storage containers to organize our pantry and common areas.
Get on a schedule.
Time management is your friend when you’re looking to refresh your home. You may be meeting with store reps, contractors, and other professionals. Maybe you work better when you set deadlines for yourself to finish a home project. I love using a digital calendar app like Google Calendars or iCal to keep track of my appointments.
Recently I’ve found wearing a watch to be a convenient and stylish way to keep track of time throughout the day. My phone isn’t always in easy reach, especially with a baby in my arms 90% of the time, but my watch is always accessible. JORD makes unique wooden watches that fit the rustic, natural style I’m planning for my home. I have the Frankie 35 in Dark Sandalwood and Slate.
