Around our neighborhood, everyone’s gearing up for the next big upcoming holiday – Halloween! Besides the candy, seeing the creative costumes people come up with is one of my favorite things about Halloween. I have a particular weakness for dog costumes.
Since I’ll likely be caring for a brand-new baby when Halloween arrives, I’ll probably forego dressing our own pups in costumes this year. But if I were going to dress up my fur babies, this is what I’d consider. You, my readers, are welcome to take any of these ideas for pop culture halloween costumes for dogs.
Game of Thrones and I go way back. As in, pre-HBO show, the-series-is-actually-called-A-Song-of-Ice-and-Fire back. It’s a fantasy of mine to dress up as Daenerys Targaryen, everyone’s beloved mother of dragons, with my fur-babies (and human baby?) as her three dragon “children.” Now that Game of Thrones is a hit show this costume would be almost universally recognizable.
You could purchase dragon costumes or engineer them out of colored fabric or felt. Bonus points if you don a long white wig and refer to yourself as khaleesi the entire day.
2. Sherlock & Watson
If you’re a big nerd like me, you’re counting down the days until the 2017 Series 4 premiere of BBC’s Sherlock. Until that day comes, we’ll have to live out our obsession in other ways. This may include dressing up your loved ones as the classic Sherlock and Watson duo.
This idea works great if you have two dogs, but it could also work for a child/dog duo. A tweed cape and deerstalker hat is instantly recognizable for Sherlock, whereas Watson could wear a bowler hat.
3. Ewoks, Wookies, and other Star Wars creatures
With the release of The Force Awakens, the public’s interest in Star Wars is booming with no signs of slowing down. There are so many well-loved and iconic characters from the series to choose from, but dressing your fur-babies as Ewoks is perhaps the easiest. They already have a full coat of fur, so you can just stick a brown hood around their necks to complete the look.
If you have a larger dog, you can channel everyone’s favorite Wookie Chewbacca by buying or making a bandolier and slinging it around your furry friend.
4. Dog for President
Not a fan of this year’s presidential candidates? Nominate your dog instead! Your best friend will be sure to win over voters with his or her good looks and slobbery kisses.
Put your pup in a presidential-looking suit jacket and tie, and finish the look with a prominently-placed “Vote For Me” sticker.
5. Harry Potter & Fluffy
Channel the world’s most famous boy wizard by dressing your dog in a pair of glasses, a black cape and/or a scarf with Griffindor’s red and gold colors.
If you have a second dog, you might dress him up as Fluffy, the three headed dog Harry faces off with in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Just get two old or thrifted stuffed dogs and attach their heads to each side of your dog’s.
If you can’t get through the day without your Starbucks fix, you’ll love this one! Dress your dog as your favorite drink, whether it’s a Mocha Puppuccino or a Pup-kin Spice Latte.
You can easily DIY this one with posterboard, cardboard, and some markers or paint to draw on Starbucks’ iconic logo.
7. Beanie Babies
Did anyone else collect Beanie Babies back in the 90’s? We had a pretty big collection that ended up being stored away somewhere in my mom’s house in case people ever start buying them for thousands of dollars.
I love this as a budget-friendly option that doesn’t take a lot of time to make, but is still immediately recognizable and unique. Turn your fur baby into a Beanie Baby! All you’ll need is a piece of cardboard or poster board, and red and white paint to make the logo. Attach it to your pet’s collar and you’re all set!
8. Stranger Dogs
Like so many Netflix viewers out there, Stranger Things is my latest obsession. The combination of creepy happenings, lovable characters, and unanswered mysteries had me binge-watching the entire first season and wishing for a second.
Your female dog could wear a light pink dress to channel Eleven, while you could get a sheriff’s outfit to turn your male dog into Chief Hopper.
Football season has started, and Halloween is the perfect opportunity to show your team spirit!
You can buy a football costume for your pup, or DIY your own with some brown and white felt. Complement your dog by wearing your favorite team’s jersey – an easy closet costume!
With new Marvel movies being released on the regular, you can’t go wrong with costuming your pup as one of the Avengers. And with new heroes being added with each release – did you see the lineup in the latest Captain America movie? – you have a wide variety of choices for which heroes you and your fur family can be.
The Avengers work especially well as a group costume if you’re looking for something your whole family to participate in.
Are you planning on dressing your fur babies for Halloween?
I’d love to hear your ideas (and see a cute picture)! Share with me in the comments!
